Apple aims to launch an ultra-thin iPhone model in 2025, significantly slimmer and more enhanced than its previous releases. This new model is popularly named the “iPhone 17 Slim.” It will be the newest addition to the iPhone 17 lineup and will incorporate major changes to its design as compared to the iPhone X.
As is the case with most newly released models, the iPhone 17 Slim would be costlier than the iPhone Pro Max. According to media reports, the gadget would have a screen size of around 6 to 6.7 inches.
Following new norms on smartphone repair ruled out by the European Union, the smartphone would make it easier to remove its battery. The newly-added aluminium chassis would also help in dissipating heat though it would arrive with a tradeoff for device protection, given that the current stainless steel used for the body offers greater durability.
Additionally, the cameras would have their placements shifted to the upper centre rather than the conventional upper left corner of the phone’s rear. Featuring an aluminium chassis, the device would be equipped with the latest A19 processor along with an enhanced front camera.
Nevertheless, due to numerous design tests, the device’s release faces potential delay, even beyond 2025. The release of the new model could potentially discontinue the current iPhone Plus series, where customers reportedly sought larger displays without the steeper pricing of the Pro models.
A bid to counter rising competition
In the second fiscal quarter of 2024, Apple reported a decline of 10.5% in iPhone sales. The tech giant also continues to rival Chinese tech companies Huawei and Honour, alongside Korea’s Samsung Electronics. Therefore, the introduction of the new iPhone model is strategic to solidify its flagship product.
This is especially important given that Samsung took the lead in the first quarter of 2024 with a share of 20.8%, while Apple trailed right behind, holding 17.3%. Thus, although unlikely, the introduction of the new model aims to make the iPhone more affordable in a bid to boost sales.
