As per a Pentagon assessment, the reason behind the surge in UFO sightings throughout the 1950s and 60s was the advanced US spy plane and space technology testing.
Additionally, officials declared there was “no proof” linking the US government to extraterrestrial encounters.
The majority of UFO encounters were regular Earthly objects, according to the study that was sent to Congress on Friday.
Pentagon officials acknowledged that their research won’t dispel popular beliefs about alien visitors, as the widespread media coverage of UAP-related topics likely has influenced public discourse and reinforced these beliefs within certain sections of the population.
The study is a part of the US government’s extensive public examination of UFOs, or “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAP) as authorities refer to them.
Congress hearings and open discussions with NASA officials have been part of the endeavour.
Pop culture has an impact on public opinion, according to a research released by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).
Researchers claim the government has secretly gathered spacecraft and alien remains, while Pentagon officials claim they approached the report openly, finding no evidence of extraterrestrial visitors.
“All investigative attempts, at all levels of categorization, determined that most encounters were normal things and occurrences and the result of misunderstanding,” Maj Gen Pat Ryder told the media.
Only over 40% of Americans believe that alien spaceships have visited Earth, up from 33% in only two years, according to a 2021 Gallup survey.
All official government inquiries conducted since 1945 were evaluated by the AARO, together with secret data and archives.
Researchers discovered that a 1961 memo about UFOs was inauthentic and an “alien spacecraft” sample collected by a UAP investigation organization was mostly made of magnesium, zinc, and bismuth.
Researchers have identified new technologies that reportedly boosted UAP reports in the 1950s and 60s, including high-altitude balloons and the U-2 spy plane, which were the subject of UFO speculation following their 1947 crash near Roswell, New Mexico.
The Central Intelligence Agency assessed that over half of the UFO reports investigated at the time were deemed US reconnaissance flights.
Secret research projects focused on creating circular or saucer-shaped aircraft, like the Canadian VZ-9AV Avrocar fighter-bomber, which was designed to take off and land vertically, matching popular imaginations of alien spacecraft.
The US government conducted UAP research programs for decades, but many were kept secret. Despite the Cold War’s technological advancements, UAP content is now more prevalent in popular culture due to a lack of trust in the government and the rise of alien-related content online.
The AARO reports that UAP sightings are increasing at a monthly rate of 50 to 100, leading to speculation about government cover-ups.
Former intelligence officer David Grusch testified in 2023 that he believes the US government holds alien bodies and spacecraft, citing documents, recordings, and colleagues as evidence.
The AARO has committed to releasing a subsequent report on recent sightings and rumors at a later time.
