‘The Fall Guy’ – currently runnin in theatres – is a 2024 American action comedy film directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce, loosely based on the 1980s TV series about stunt performers.
The Fall Guy premiered at SXSW on March 12, 2024, and was released internationally on April 24 followed by the United States on May 3. It received generally positive reviews, and set a Guinness World Record for the most cannon rolls performed in a car.
What inspires the movie?
‘The Fall Guy’ which is a film based on a TV series made four decades ago with the same name. The most accurate point of the film which directly hits the audience like a reality is that the era of action films has been there since the beginning all over the world, but the technicians and artists who create this action by risking their lives are often forgotten in the star-studded awards evening. Body doubles, duplicates or stunt doubles of superstars are not remembered at such occasions and the film ‘The Fall Guy’ is the story of one such stunt double.
The story of a funny stunt double
The film ‘The Fall Guy’, which starts on the sets of a Hollywood film, makes its hero fall from such a height that even the audience starts wondering what a life stuntmen have. This is Colt. He is the stunt double of superstar Tom Ryder. He did this stunt again so that the hero does not see his face very closely in the frame. But, there is a problem with the cable. He falls from a height of the sky. He gets a spinal injury and he leaves everything and starts working as a valet parking cars somewhere.
Return at the call of love
After about one and a half years, the same film producer on whose set the accident happened remembers Colt. Jodi, who used to operate the camera in the action scenes then, has now become a film director.
There was love between the two and citing this love, the producer calls Colt back. He does come back. He also tries to get his lost love. And, when he is sad, he keeps shedding tears listening to Taylor Swift’s song ‘All is Well’. But, the story is not that simple. There is something else going on in its undercurrent. He has not been called to help Jodi but as part of some other conspiracy and as the pages of this conspiracy open, the thrill of the film becomes interesting.
Philosophy in action comedy
The film ‘The Fall Guy’ is fit for those who like comedy in action. The use of dialogues from hit films in the film’s own dialogues is fun. And, if you possess even a little knowledge of film shooting, then the fun of watching the film can be doubled. And, in between the fun, it also gives sermons on life philosophy. For instance, when Colt says that stuntmen are taught to give thumbs up in every situation in life. The stunt ends. The stunt coordinator runs towards his partner and a hand comes out of the wrecked car, making a thumbs up sign.
“This is life. If someone asks us in any situation – ‘How are you?’ – We just say ‘I am fine’. We never say that no, I am not fine. Someone listen to me. But, everyone is running. Everyone has created an image of each other in their minds according to their own understanding. And that’s it, we talk to the other person only that much and in the same manner.”
The magic of Ryan and Emily’s pairing
When a stuntman remains a stuntman and the woman he loves has now become a film director, how does he rekindle his old love? Ryan Gosling has done a very good job in playing this character. Be it listening to songs inside the car or discussing a scene and expressing his thoughts in the split screen under the pretext of discussing the story, Ryan has lived Colt. Emily Blunt is superb.
When Colt teases Jodi who is walking around wearing a hat and she says that it is a fashion here to wear it, then that scene directly satirizes the world of show-off. The story of the film ‘The Fall Guy’ is amazing. The acting of both the main actors has also been good. Along with them is Winston Duke of ‘Black Panther’. And, Ryan has some very good scenes with him too.
What could or couldn’t be changed?
The film falters In the climax. If we count the weak links of the film ‘The Fall Guy’, then the first is its script which suddenly collapses after the whole matter is revealed. The tormented people of years set out to settle accounts in minutes. Since the hero of the film is a body double, some more unusual possibilities of comedy could have been made in the script.
There could have been one or two more long emotional scenes like split screen with the heroine and the most important thing is that the music aspect of the film is not strong. Despite all these problems, director David Leitch has kept his focus on Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. In a way, he has lived himself in Colt.
Who is David Leitch?
For those who do not know, let us tell you that David Leitch has worked as Brad Pitt’s stunt double in many Hollywood films. He has done stunt direction and has also become a film director with the film ‘John Wick’ released 10 years ago. ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Bullet Train’ and ‘Fast and Furious Hobbs and Shaw’ are just a few of his directorial ventures that have been watched by action cinema lovers all over the world.
