Student loan of 2,77,000 borrowers will be cancelled. It will save a whooping $7.4 billion – the biggest in the history of forgiving student debts.
U.S president Joe Biden has added another loan-relief initiative to his long trail of student debt forgiveness countered centrally for young voters. Burdened by huge amounts of student loan to pursue higher education, Mr. President’s announcement in White House passed an air of relief among students.
The plan is focused on cancelling a total of $7.4 billion of education loan which will impact 2,77,000 borrowers. This plan is an extension to his last week submission outlining student debt relief to over 30 million Americans. After Supreme Court struck down a far more ambitious plan to cancel $400 billion in debt last year, the Biden administration has strategized to generate relief packages in smaller quantities targeted to a particular sub-set of borrowers.
All the beneficiaries of this plan will be informed via email about their loan-cancellations. Despite Republican opposition and legal challenges, Biden has been adamant to shore up support of young voters who are affected by soaring education costs.
So far, the Biden administration has forgiven $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million borrowers.
Who are eligible for student loan relief plans?
More than 200,000 borrowers who are eligible have borrowed relatively small amounts – $12,000 or less for their college studies. They must also be an enrolled beneficiary of administration’s income-driven repayment plan, known as SAVE. All the past payments must had been transacted through their SAVE account. This adjustment will save around $3.6 billion in debt.
SAVE – or Saving on your valuable education was introduced by Biden administration last year to establish a government-controlled surveillance on one’s education debt. It made the process more seamless and somewhat generous.
The plan required borrowers to open a SAVE account and pay 5 percent of their discretionary income -that is all the remaining income available after one pay’s for food, housing etc. for 25 years. But if the monthly income is less than $30,000 then the monthly payment will be zero.
65,700 borrowers who have been making regular repayments for a long time but were being deprived of relief because of administrative failures will receive forgiveness. These many people will be relieved of a total of $3.5 billion.
4,600 borrowers enrolled in Public Service Loan Forgiveness which is designed to help public servants like teachers and government employees will receive forgiveness after 10 years of repayment. This will save a total of $300 million of debt.
Consequences of new student loan relief plan
The new plan would reduce the amount that 25 million borrowers still owe on their undergraduate or graduate loans. It would wipe away the entire amount for more than four million Americans. Altogether, White House officials said, 10 million borrowers would see debt relief of $5,000 or more.
Others who will see relief include teachers, librarians, academics and public safety workers who have been making student loan payment for 10 years.
The economic consequences are going to be severe especially for lower-middle income groups. Chunks of money which will be saved will be spent on other important purchases – home, car, retirement plans, insurance etc.
The new plan aims to fully forgive debt of more than four million people, eliminate the interest balances of up to 23 million and relieve at least $5,000 for more than 10 million.
Roughly one in eight Americans – around 43 million people – have outstanding student loan debt.
Mr. Biden said this week he would make another attempt at large-scale debt forgiveness for about 30 million people, despite legal roadblocks. The unwavering commitment that Biden administration has shown to relief students off their debts has met with condemnation from Representative John Moolenaar, Republican of Michigan. He said, “Your incentivizing reform is a penalty for those who did pay their debts to subsidize for those who didn’t.”
Biden in past few days has electrified his election campaign to uplift confidence among target voters. Whether it was a shift in foreign policy to hammer Israel from further destruction in Gaza and allowing aid to pass through or his willingness to press for student loan relief plans.
