Russia’ powerplay in UNSC ends North Korea sanctions

Dozen major sanctions were adopted against Pyongyang by members of UNSC since 2006 to stimulate denuclearization. On Thursday, Russia vetoed the renewal of a special monitoring panel established to investigate violations in the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has drawn international condemnation for its perpetual nuclear engagement since 2006; inviting a flurry of sanctions from World countries, until Russia on Thursday forged its Veto power to decompress Pyongyang of its said obligation.

The 15-members of UNSC have unanimously deployed dozens of sanctions on Pyongyang since 2006; for its use of ballistic missiles and hard power. The sanctions terminated the export of nuclear weapons, prohibited countries to cooperate on scientific endeavors, among other actions. Despite the consistent monitoring efforts, many countries have failed to enforce the provisions envisaged in the said sanctions, compromising its effectiveness.

Russia on Thursday used its Veto power as a permanent member of UNSC to eliminate the nearly two decade long sanction cycle against Pyongyang; infuriating Western alliances and fueling speculations against Moscow using its veto power to dismiss possible ramifications for its violation of the sanction treaty as it continues to buy heavy bulk of nuclear weapons from Pyongyang to aid in the war against Ukraine.

Had the resolution been passed, it would have extended the directive for the culmination of a panel of sitting experts to monitor the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang and if there were any operational discrepancies or deliberate violations.

The Security Council adopted the Resolution 1718 in 2006 after Pyongyang’ ramping of ballistic missiles to conduct its first nuclear test explosion, drawing international disapprobation. The sanctions imposed restricted the supply of heavy weaponry, missile technology and selected goods. Since then a chain of severe sanctions have followed to stimulate denuclearization. Resolution 2397 was the last adopted sanction on North Korea in 2017; imposing restrictions on oil imports and on export of agricultural goods, labor and metal.

Vasily Nebenzya, a Russian diplomat and the current Representative of Russia in United Nations has delivered Veto indicating the personal motive of United States led Western alliances to strangle Pyongyang by subjecting the latter to “harsh propaganda” and “direct threats”.

The Russia Ambassador accused the panel of experts for failing to contain nuclear proliferation and falling in the hands of Western counterparts.

The U.S Deputy Ambassador, Robert Wood reciprocated by addressing the essentiality of an institution like the United Nations. He emphasized on the sea of future ruptures which will be awakened as North Korea jeopardizes international security and initiate the development of long-ranging ballistic missiles and destructive mass weapons.

Hurdled by the deepening relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, many international spokespersons and world leaders have continued slashing Russia for its nuclear prioritization to sabotage Ukrainian economy by fostering a meaningful relationship with the “weapon holder”.

Kim in-ae, Vice Spokesperson for Ministry of Unification, Seoul has slammed Russia for its “irresponsible” veto, blocking the renewal of a panel of UN experts to monitor and investigate sanction violations.

The United Nation Security Council had established a special monitoring committee of experts to monitor sanctions and investigate voluntary violations for 14 years until Russia vetoed its renewal on Thursday.
