Two days before the New Hampshire primary, Ron DeSantis, once thought to be the Republicans’ best chance to unseat Donald Trump, withdrew from the race for the presidency on Sunday, making Nikki Haley the only person to challenge the former US president for the party’s nomination.
His announcement, which was made in a video uploaded to X, was made in the wake of his dismal second-place finish in Iowa’s Republican primary last week.
“I can’t expect our fans to volunteer their time and give their money if we don’t have a clear path to success, but I would do everything in my power to get a positive outcome – more interviews, more campaign visits, etc. DeSantis stated : “As a result, I am suspending my campaign as of today.”
DeSantis quits presidential race due to reasons :
DeSantis made the decision after several days of discussions with funders. Over the course of the weekend, it became clear that he lacked the necessary financial background and reasons to continue his campaign.
Many of DeSantis’ unaffiliated employees and supporters were surprised when he and his wife, Casey, announced their choice Sunday afternoon.
Two Republican donors with knowledge of the conversations told CNN that DeSantis personally called a number of his major fundraisers and told them he woke up that morning and concluded there was no way he could win and it was time to leave.
With three years remaining in his second term as governor until he is 45, DeSantis’ future plans are unknown. DeSantis has been sowing the seeds for a possible 2028 campaign in the past few weeks, saying some Trump supporters have already been pushing for it. The governor recently told reporters, “They’ve been coming to me saying, ‘We want you in 2028, we love you, man.’
Only Haley and Trump Will face Biden in elections
As a result, Haley, the last U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, remains the last Republican to call on Trump for the nomination. In November’s general election, the winner of this year’s Republican primary will face President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.
As people across the state prepare to cast ballots for Tuesday’s primary in Seabrook, New Hampshire, Haley, the former South Carolina governor, drew applause when she revealed that DeSantis had dropped out of the race. “For now, I’ll leave you with this: May the best woman win,” Haley said.
The Florida governor said he was backing Mr Trump, who emerged as the overwhelming favorite after his 51% victory in the Iowa caucuses. According to Mr. DeSantis, it is evident that the majority of Republican voters “want to give Donald Trump another chance.”
Trump’s team denounced Mr. DeSantis as “the globalist and Democrat candidate who will do anything to stop the America First movement” and called on all Republicans to support Mr. Trump after his decision.
