British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday sacked Suella Braverman from the position of Britain’s Secretary, following an article in which she accused the police of following standards with pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The dismissed minister had said that the police officers “make choices” when it comes to demonstrations and considered that they ignored “pro-Palestinian mobs” during protest marches against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. She also described the marches calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as “hate marches” days later. She says that living without shelter is a “lifestyle choice.”
It is noteworthy that Braverman was accused of escalating tensions through an article she wrote last week in The Times, in which she accused the Metropolitan Police of having a double standard regarding how it dealt with various protests based on political affiliation.
Sunak has come under increasing pressure to sack Braverman after her critics accused her of escalating tensions during weeks of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests in Britain.
Yesterday evening, Sunday, Braverman doubled her calls for further action against pro-Palestine demonstrators.
She said that “it is necessary to take further action” against the protests, which have led to “the pollution of London’s streets… with hatred, violence, and anti-Semitism,” considering that “anti-Semitism and other forms of racism, along with the glorification of terrorism on this scale, is deeply concerning.”
Braverman was appointed as Britain’s secretary of state in the Home Department by former Prime Minister Liz Truss in September 2022. She was ordered to resign weeks into the job for what she said was breaking rules by sending an official document from her personal email account. She was reinstated as head of the Home Department by Sunak after he became prime minister.
