A spokesperson for the couple said, “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart”.
No one predicted this because while their last public appearance together was at the 2018 Oscars, Streep was wearing her wedding band.
In addition, Streep and Gomer celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on September 30, and they showed no signs of disagreement or instability.
The audience was shocked as Meryl underscored before in a 2002 interview with Vogue, that the secret to keeping their relationship over the years was “goodwill and resilience — and to keep in silence every once in a while.”
Streep and Gummer were photographed at many events together over the years but largely kept their personal lives away from the public.
Streep hailed Gummer in her Best Actress Oscar acceptance speech for her performance in “The Iron Lady” in 2012.
She said: “First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me.”
About their careers, Streep exerted strenuous efforts to become one of the greatest actresses of our generation, Gummer was considered a respected sculptor as well.
Steep has received numerous accolades throughout her career spanning over four decades, including a record 21 Academy Award nominations, winning three, and a record 32 Golden Globe Award nominations, winning eight.
Streep was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor by President Barack Obama.
The couple has four children: Henry Wolfe, 43, Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 30.
They also have five grandchildren: Two grandchildren from Wolfe, two grandchildren from Mamie, and one newborn grandchild from Grace.
Most notably, Meryl Streep met Gomer, and at the time she was mourning her friend John Cazale, a wonderful love story began between them, and the love turned into marriage after only 6 months of dating.
