Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama, who was chosen by Republican leaders to respond to President Biden’s State of the Union speech on Thursday night, painted a bleak picture of America during his administration and attempted to project an image of him as being elderly and disconnected from the concerns of regular citizens.
Katie Britt: who is she?
In 2022, Britt, then 42 years old, was elected to the junior senator position from Alabama, taking over for the late Sen. Richard Shelby. In the Republican primary runoff, she faced a battle against Rep. Mo Brooks, who was initially backed by former President Donald Trump. Afterward, though, when surveys showed Brooks behind, he pulled his support. Months after Britt won the most votes in the primary and moved on to a runoff against Brooks, Trump gave her his endorsement.
She is a member of the Banking, Rules, and Appropriations Committees in the Senate. She is the first female senator from Alabama and the youngest Republican woman to be elected to the Senate. In addition to serving as Shelby’s lengthy chief of staff, Britt presided over the Business Council of Alabama. She had been Shelby’s deputy campaign manager for his 2016 reelection campaign before taking over as head of his office.
In the Republican answer, she addressed the country as “a proud wife and mom of two school-aged kids” and stated that her kids were the reason she “ran for the Senate.”
Later, Britt declared that she had realized her American ambition of being “the daughter of two small business owners from rural Enterprise, Alabama, to be elected to the U.S. Senate at the age of 40.”
Wesley Britt, her spouse, chaired her campaign and is currently employed as a state lobbyist. In addition, he played football in the NFL for four seasons, all with the New England Patriots as a lineman.
Britt’s reaction to the State of the Union
Delivered from her kitchen table at her Montgomery, Alabama home, Britt criticized Mr. Biden for his foreign policy, economy, immigration, and criminal justice programs. Regarding the president, she pointed out his advanced age, calling him “a permanent politician who has been in office for longer than I’ve been alive.”
“It’s been a minute since Joe Biden pumped gas, ran carpool, or pushed a grocery cart,” Britt said. “Meanwhile, the rest of us see every day that our dollar doesn’t go as far. “While the president brags about the achievements of his economic policies, which the White House has called “Bidenomics,” Britt claimed that the American people are “scraping by.”
“Right now, the American dream has turned into a nightmare for so many families,” Britt stated. “This is where the real, unvarnished reality of our union starts and finishes: Our families are suffering. Our nation is capable of more.”
Immigration
Britt said that Mr. Biden‘s executive measures during his first 100 days in office are what led to the current state of affairs at the border. “This crisis is despicable and the truth is, it is almost entirely preventable,” she continued, branding his border policy “a disgrace.”
By stating that “innocent Americans are dying,” she attempted to incite dread and told Mr. Biden that “you only have yourself to blame.” The 22-year-old Laken Riley’s murder on the University of Georgia campus last month was reported by the Alabama Republican. Republicans have said that the reason behind her murder is because of Mr. Biden’s immigration policy, and the suspect in her death is a migrant from Venezuela. Additionally, Britt discussed a lady she met in Texas who she claimed was a victim of cartel-run sex trafficking.
Alabama and IVF
After the Alabama Supreme Court determined last month that frozen embryos can be regarded as minors under Alabama law and that doctors might face criminal charges for damaged embryos, Britt attempted to reassure people that Republicans favor access to in vitro fertilization services. The judgment resulted in the abrupt cessation of embryo transfers for women receiving the procedure, as several clinics in the state halted their programs while they assessed their liabilities.
Republicans, according to her, are the party of “hardworking parents and families,” who “want families to grow” and are striving to better the country’s future for the next generation. “It’s why we strongly support continued nationwide access to in vitro fertilization,” she stated.
Gov. Kay Ivey of Alabama approved legislation earlier this week that shields clinicians from legal action and punishment over embryos harmed or destroyed during in vitro treatments. The measure was enacted by the GOP-led Alabama Legislature.
Trump commends Britt’s GOP reaction
Trump described her as a “great contrast” to Joe Biden in a social media post, adding that she was “compassionate and caring, especially concerning Women and Women’s Issues.” “[H]er conversation on Migrant Crime” was likewise hailed by Trump as “powerful and insightful.”
Britt announced her support for Trump in an opinion post she published for the website Yellowhammer in December.
