After 24 years, Simone Inzaghi tasted Serie and title win again. This time, however, as a coach.
Last night, Inter Milan won the Serie A and the title after beating AC Milan by 2-1 with 5 matches in hand. It is the 20th Scudetto or Serie A title in the club’s history. And this is Inzaghi’s first Serie A title in his 8-year coaching career. Inzaghi previously won the Serie A in 2000 with Lazio in his playing career.
Goal Scorers and red cards
Winning the Milan derby mean is winning the title – knowing this – Inter took the lead in the 18th minute with Francesco Acerbi’s goal. Markus Thuram doubled the goal margin in the 49th minute. Milan narrowed the gap with Tomori’s goal in the 80th minute. But in the end they couldn’t delay Inter’s title win.
Losing to city rivals, and falling behind in the league, that too at home – AC Milan footballers may not have accepted it. So there was tension in both camps during the injury time. Inter’s Denzel Dumfries and Theo Hernandez were red carded in the 93rd minute. Milan’s David Calabria saw a red card after 3 minutes.
Celebrations
Inter players and coaches ran on to the pitch to celebrate at the final whistle at the ground both sides share, although Milan were the home side for this fixture.
This was the first time the Serie A title has ever been won in the 116 years of the Milan derby.
“I feel like crying because we worked so hard, we deserve this joy,” said captain Martinez, who has scored 25 goals in all competitions this season.
“It’s been wonderful but we have to keep going because we’ve already won a lot of trophies and we want to win many more.”
Simone Inzaghi first win as coach
Although he won his first Serie A title as a coach, Simone has already had success in other competitions. After his playing career, Simeone began his coaching career at Lazio. From 2016 to 2021, he won 3 titles there—two Italian Super Cups, one Italian Cup. Inter took charge in the 2021-22 season. Inter won the Italian Cup in his first season in charge. He retained the title the following season. In addition, he won the Italian Super Cup three years in a row for Inter.
Inzaghi, 48, is happy with what he has achieved so far in his coaching career. He is particularly pleased with his achievements in the Inter Milan dugout. “Six trophies in three years and a Champions League final, it’s hard to imagine achieving so much,” he said after winning the Serie A and the title yesterday. You have to look at the whole three years together. We had a good year. But the road to this victory has been built over a long period of time.
Inzaghi is also one of the few coaches who have stood in the dugout at Inter. Yesterday’s win against Milan was Simeone’s 100th in the Inter dugout. Only four Inter coaches have achieved this feat – Helenio Herrera, Roberto Mancini, Giovanni Trapattoni and Arpad Weiss.
Player of the Match
Marcus Thuram won the honour of the player of the match. Despite his goal he played role on the match.
He stated that ‘Crazy feeling, crazy game. We wanted to do it for our fans and we did it. It’s my first league title and I’m very proud of it.’
