Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, a Republican, called on former president Donald Trump to win over moderates and independents who supported her in the primary, as she decided to terminate her White House candidacy on Wednesday.
“I hope Donald Trump does that,” Haley stated in a broadcast speech in Charleston, South Carolina. “It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him.”
Haley’s Ambitions Shut Down by Trump’s Dominance in the Primaries
Haley and Trump competed head-to-head for the opportunity to challenge President Joe Biden in November’s election, but Haley only won one state on “Super Tuesday” and never really stood in Trump’s way of winning the nomination.
Before Trump appointed the 52-year-old as ambassador to the UN in 2017, she was mostly unknown outside of her home state of South Carolina. She utilized the prominent UN position to hone her reputation as a straightforward conservative.
Haley took great satisfaction in being the final opponent preventing Trump’s “chaos” and the Republican nomination for president in 2024. “I am filled with gratitude for the outpouring of support we’ve received from all across our great country,” Haley said.
“However, I must now halt my crusade for the time being. I have fulfilled my promise to ensure that Americans’ voices are heard. I don’t regret anything.”
