Google lost the monopoly case to Epic Games, the maker of the game Fortnite, and a federal court accused it of having an “illegal monopoly.” Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Google in 2020, accusing it of illegally making its app store dominant over competitors. Hundreds of millions of people use the store to install applications for smartphones that support the company’s Android software.
They said they would appeal the result.
Google choices
“Android and G Play offer more choice and openness than any other major mobile platform,” said Wilson White, vice president of government affairs and public policy at Google.
“Experience has shown that we compete intensely with Apple and its App Store, as well as the app stores on Android devices and gaming consoles,” White added.
He continued, “We will continue to defend the Android business model, and remain deeply committed to our users, partners, and the broader Android ecosystem.”Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, said: Work on treatments will begin in January.
The ruling will give developers more freedom over how to distribute their apps and how to make money from them.
Google emphasizes that its commissions are competitive for the industry and that it provides additional rewards such as reach, transaction security, and malware protection. But if the ruling stands; It may have to allow more app stores on Android devices, and it will lose revenue from any in-app purchases.
