Former US federal prosecutor Glenn Kirchner said that the probability of former President Donald Trump being convicted at least once in 2024 is “very high.”
Kirchner said in an interview with the British “Sky News” network that he believes that in at least one case, “the judge and the prosecution team understand the need to punish this type of violation with imprisonment.” Considering that “the chances of conviction are very high.”
He pointed out, “It is important to recognize who the witnesses against Donald Trump are. These are not enemies or opponents of Donald Trump, and these are not angry Democrats.” Pointing out that “it is interesting that the people we know who are likely to be on the witness list are almost exclusively Republicans, some of whom are former members of his cabinet, the former Attorney General, the former Vice President. And I think the testimony that we will see will come from a chorus of “Republican votes, and that makes it more difficult for Trump.”
Regarding the possibility of a prison sentence, Kirchner said: “No one knows if he will go to prison; but given the nature of his crimes, assuming he was convicted for essentially trying to put an end to the peaceful transfer of presidential power, I think it will take a long time.” According to what was reported by “Russia Today”.
Trump faces 91 charges in four criminal trials, and some trial dates have been set. The first is March 4 for his alleged role in the events of January 6, in which he faces four criminal charges related to trying to remain in power after the 2020 elections: conspiracy to violate civil rights, and conspiracy to defraud the government. Obstruction of official proceedings, and conspiracy to commit such obstruction.
Trump’s court filings will intersect sharply with the election campaign. The first trial begins the day before Super Tuesday (March 5), a date usually chosen in February or March when the largest number of US states hold primary elections and caucuses.
Then there is the Republican Convention in July when a nominee is chosen. Depending on the speed and outcome of the court proceedings, Republicans may be faced with choosing a convicted felon as their nominee for the White House.
Election Day is November 5, 2024. The political picture can be shaped, in large part, by the judge and jury’s conclusions.
