During their Saturday visit to Uvalde, Texas, Prince Harry and his partner Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, had a meeting with the family of Irma Garcia, the cherished schoolteacher who lost her life in the Robb Elementary School shooting.
Garcia had been a teacher for 23 years. In May 2022, an 18-year-old shooter entered the school equipped with a rifle and started shooting, killing 21 people: 19 students and 2 instructors. Joe Garcia, her spouse, passed away from a heart attack two days after she did.
John Martinez, Irma Garcia’s nephew, told CNN Since the shooting, which the US Department of Justice and other agencies concur, was greeted with a horrific security response, Harry and Meghan have maintained touch with his family.
The day before Meghan and Harry stopped in Uvalde to see how the family was doing, Martinez claimed, Meghan went and talked at the South by Southwest event in Austin on Friday.
Martinez wrote in a text, “It was an amazing experience, they’re so nice and empathetic, very honest and down to earth, humble people.”
He said,” It came as a bit of a surprise because not too long ago , Meghan told us over the phone that she was going to be visiting the kiddies, and naturally, we were thrilled.”
Harry and Meghan discussed future plans with Irma and Joe’s children, and Meghan surprised Martinez’s mom with a birthday cake. They sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Claudia Martinez, Irma’s sister, in a video shared by Martinez.
Meghan Markle visited Uvalde days after the shooting
she was seen placing flowers at a makeshift memorial in front of the county courthouse. She took the trip as a mother to offer condolences and support to the community.
The royal visit followed an independent investigator’s report, which cleared local police of wrongdoing in a shooting incident, sparking anger from victims’ families who denounced the findings and pleaded for accountability nearly two years later.
Jesse Prado, a retired Austin police detective, defended law enforcement’s actions in good faith, despite multiple agencies claiming they botched their response to the massacre.
The meeting escalated into anger and shouting after Prado admitted to identifying numerous failures in law enforcement response but did not identify specific local officers responsible.
You mentioned that they acted with sincerity. Is that what you refer to as good faith? After receiving many calls informing them that children were still alive inside, they waited for 77 minutes,” Veronica Mata, whose 10-year-old daughter Tess was slain, stated. “Nobody else is going to fight for us, so we’re going stay here and keep fighting for ourselves.”
