England 1 – 0 Serbia
Jude Bellingham scored to give England a winning start to the European Championship with a win over Serbia. The Real Madrid star headed home a Bukayo Soccer cross to give Gareth Southgate’s side the lead.
The build-up to the game has been overshadowed by concerns about violence between rival supporters. And some of those fears were realized when police rushed to separate brawling fans in Gelsenkirchen earlier in the day.
Footage on social media showed men throwing chairs at each other outside a restaurant in the city flying a Serbian flag. England fans were celebrating soon after Bellingham’s early goal kicked off.
Match highlights and goal
Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and Manchester City’s Phil Foden were in great form last season in club football. Although two English footballers could not pull that form in the jersey of the national team today. Bellingham scored a great goal. In the 13th minute, Bukayo Saka headed the soccer cross and gave England the lead.
But apart from that, Jude Bellingham hasn’t played very well. Phil Foden didn’t seem like in his familiar form either. Harry Kane, who has had a great season for Bayern Munich, had the chance to double the lead in the second half. However, Serbia’s goalkeeper Predrag Rajković failed that attempt.
Kane made a record 23rd appearance for his country in a major tournament. “It’s a tough game. They are a tough team and they have good players,” said the England captain. “We’ve dealt with it well and it’s good to get the three points and improve (for us). It’s good that we got the win today.”
On the other hand, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford frustrated Serbia with a brilliant save against Dušan Vlahović. Overall, Serbia played relatively well in the second half.
How much the match has been rigged can be understood in a statistic. England (5) and Serbia (6), both teams have taken only 11 shots. Since 1980, there has not been a match with fewer shots in the Euro!

“Personally it’s a great start for me to boost my confidence and help the boys get the win,” Bellingham said after the match.
The victory sent England top of Group C after Denmark drew 1-1 with Slovenia in the previous game, thanks to a Christian Eriksen goal three years after suffering a heart attack on the pitch at the last Euros. England take on Denmark in Frankfurt on Thursday. England were beaten finalists at the last Euros, losing to Italy on penalties in the final three years ago.
