Germany 5-1 Scotland
Germany is three-time Euro champions. On the other hand, Scotland, have played in the Euros only three times before. The difference in strength between the two teams is almost sky-high. It was revealed today in the opening match of Euro 2024 in Munich.
A team’s opening match In such a good form gives confidence to the rest of the team for the upcoming matches. So if that is the case then Germany should be filled with confidence in their next matches. Julian Nagelsmann’s team won today in Munich by playing completely one-sided.
Scotland coach Steve Clarke tried to play the team low-block against strong Germany. But he was not very successful in that attempt.
Match highlight and goals
Germany scored the first goal in the 10th minute in Munich, the second in the 19th minute, then the third goal before the break. Scotland were knocked out of the match after conceding three goals in the first half. The fate of this match was decided then and there. The rest was formality. After another 45 minutes, when the was about to be ending, the score line of the match was Germany 5:1 Scotland.
The European campaign of the three-time champions began the match with a goal against Scotland. It took Germany only 10 minutes to break the Scottish defence. Leverkusen’s 21 year old midfielder Florian Wirtz scored Germany’s first goal from Joshua Kimmich’s pass.
With this goal, Wirtz got his name registered in the record book. No one scored a goal at a younger age for Germany in the main tournament of the Euros. Wirtz became the third German to score in the opening match of the Euros. Earlier, Gerd Müller scored in the opening match of Euro 1972, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the first match of Euro 1980.
Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala scored Germany’s second goal in the 19th minute. He is 21 years old on the day of the match. This is the first time in Euro history that two players aged 21 or under have scored in the same match.
Scotland’s Porteous was shown a red card for a foul on German captain Gundogan just before the break. Germany gets a penalty. Kai Havertz scored from the spot kick to make it 3-0.
However, In the second half, even with 10 men, the Scots kept the Germans at bay for a while. But the end was not saved. Niclas Füllkrug made it 4-0 with a goal within a minutes of coming on the field as a substitute for Havertz. In the 87th minute, Scotland’s McKenna headed off Germany’s Antonio Rudiger and into the net, an own goal to make it 4-1. Emre Can made it 5-1 for Germany in added time.

Germany storm to the top of Group A with tonight’s emphatic win in Munich. They’ve boosted their goal difference to plus four, although, they won’t need to rely on that.
Next up for Germany is a meeting with Hungary in Stuttgart on Wednesday. As for Scotland, they will attempt to dust themselves down for a huge midweek clash with Switzerland.
