France started their Euro 2024 tournament journey with an exciting win. France is one of the favourite teams of this year’s Euro. Many have kept the team made with Mbappe, Kanté, Griezmann in line to win the Euro title this time.
France beat Austria by 1-0 on Monday (June 17) in Düsseldorf, Germany. France won by a own goal by Austria team. However, Mbappe’s injury has become a cause of concern for the France team. Shortly before the end of the match, Mbappe’s nose hit an Austrian defender’s shoulder and broke the bone. This French star, who has just joined Real Madrid, left the field with his face covered in blood.
Match highlights and goal
France started off playing pressing football from the beginning of the match. In keeping up with them, Austria also fought on an equal footing. However, in the 38th minute of the match, Austria gave France the lead by sending the ball into their own net. Austrian defender Maximilian Wöber sent the ball into his own net by clearing Mbappe’s cross from inside the D-box. France went into the break with this lead.
However, despite creating great opportunities in the second half, this team who won the Euro last time in 2000 did not see a goal. France could have scored at the beginning of the second half. However, Mbappe failed score even with the goalkeeper standing alone.
France gets a free kick in the 85th minute of the match. Mbappe was injured in a collision with Austrian defender Kevin Danso while heading towards the end of the match. The 25 year old star immediately fell to the ground, blood was seen oozing from his nose. The French medical team came and found that Mbappe had broken the bone of his nose. Without taking any additional risk, Mbappe was replaced by Olivier Giroud, by the French coach Didier Deschamps.

However, after the dreadful incident, Mbappe saw a yellow card for entering the field with an injury without the permission of the referee. Austria also squandered several chances of scoring in the end minutes of the match. As a result, France started the Euro journey with the victory of that one goal.
Player of the match
N’Golo Kanté has been named Player of the Match by UEFA. UEFA’s Technical Observer Panel said: “He won a lot of balls, blocked Austria off in the middle of the pitch and played some good passes forward. Kanté also made an eye-catching covering challenge as the last man.”

Austria had not lost in seven games before this clash, claiming victory in six of those games. France remain unbeaten in their opening group game at all European Championships, winning seven times from 10 outings.
