Queen Margaret II of Denmark signed her historic abdication of the throne yesterday, Sunday, Which paved the way for her son, Frederick X, to become king immediately, according to what Danish Radio DR reported.
Margaret, who is 83 years old, is the first Danish queen to voluntarily abdicate the throne in nearly 900 years since King Erik III Lamm stepped down and entered a monastery in 1146.
Margaret signed her abdication during a meeting with the Danish Cabinet at Christiansborg Palace. It is the huge complex in Copenhagen, which includes royal reception rooms, and royal stables, in addition to the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Supreme Court.
The document was presented to her while she was sitting at a huge table covered with a red cloth, around which sat members of the royal family and members of the Danish government.
Frederik, 55, was present in the room, after which Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced him king on the palace balcony in front of thousands of people.
The ceremony was also attended by Frederik Christian’s 18-year-old son, who will become Crown Prince of Denmark and heir to the throne.
“My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow,” Frederik X said in his first speech as king, donning a ceremonial military uniform adorned with medals and golden epaulets. “It is a task I have approached all my life. It is a task I take on with pride, respect, and joy.”
Under Denmark tradition, each new sovereign adopts a royal motto as a guiding principle for their reign. Frederik’s motto is: “United, committed, for the kingdom of Denmark.”
