In a gesture of support following the recent high-stakes presidential election on the self-ruled island, two US lawmakers arrived in Taipei on Wednesday.
Diaz-Balart is a Florida Republican, and Bera is a Democrat from California.
This month marks the second visit by American officials to the Pacific nation of Nauru, the announcement of visit came surprisingly as it was rumoured that USA was breaking its connections and allying with Beijing.
After Taiwan’s Presidential elections which only includes 12 states now including Holy See which Beijing claims as a part of China
China views Lai Ching-te, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party, as a “separatist,” and she emerged victorious in last month’s island presidential election. Before election day, Beijing threatened to bring “war and decline” to Taiwan if he won.
The purpose of the visit is to “express solidarity in their shared commitment to democratic values, reaffirm U.S. support for Taiwan following their successful democratic elections, and explore opportunities to further strengthen the established defense and economic relationship between the United States and Taiwan.”
Democratic Taiwan has its own government, armed forces, and currency, but China continues to claim that it is its territory and has the right to use force to annex the island. In recent years, China has increased its military presence on Taiwan, deploying bombers and naval vessels almost daily.
The defense ministry in Taipei announced on Monday that it had found a record six Chinese balloons over the weekend, one of which was floating straight overhead the island.
In a statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry expressed gratitude to the US Congress for setting up the post-election visit, saying it was intended to “deliver a positive message of firm bipartisan support” for the island and its democracy.
How China responded to US visit to Taiwan?
China criticized some countries for congratulating Lai Ching-te on his inauguration, China claimed that by winning the election, they should not interfere in China’s internal affairs. China has never stopped trying to conquer Taiwan.
China believes that the visit of American officials to Taiwan sends a good message to Taiwan about independence According to the statement made by their office, “The purpose of this trip is to reaffirm the support of the United States.”
They expressed unity in their commitment to the leadership following Taiwan’s independence referendum and sought to strengthen opportunities for the United States to block strong trade and opportunities with Taiwan.
According to the Taiwanese government, Beijing has no right to protect or represent Taiwanese citizens in the world although there are not good relations between the two countries, the USA is Taiwan’s biggest supporter abroad and one of its main products.
USA support is true and 100 percent bipartisan
“The United States supports Taiwan says Mario Díaz Balart. “This is true and 100 percent bipartisan,” the U.S. Representative said Mario Díaz-Balart. This happened despite Washington deciding to establish relations with Taiwan in 1979. It recognizes China, but US policy still wants the island to be independent defense can be guaranteed.
As a result, there is now dependence on US military equipment , and a law requiring Washington
to consider the threat to the island as a “serious concern”. China regularly uses warships and aircraft to threaten and harm Taiwan.
In the 24 hours until 06:00 on Thursday morning, 18 ships and 18 aircraft operated near the island. Three
Chinese rockets were seen flying over the island It is unclear whether these were used for military purposes or for information gathering.
