The push to oust the 56th serving House Speaker of the House of Representatives – Mike Johnson by the Georgia House Republican Taylor Greene is reaching an uneventful climax, as the latter prepares herself to convince the House Representatives to accept the resolution.
His speakership – Mike Johnson has been under the radar since the House Republican Representative Taylor Greene has filed a motion on 22nd March to vacate the office of the House Speaker. The resolution awaiting its floor test and Johnson – his destiny as the Speaker of the House, has demonstrated his financial support time and again for the Ukrainian battalions; aggravating hardline conservatives of the House Republican.
In his willingness to push for the approval of tens of billions of dollars in wartime funding for Ukraine, as well as Israel, has been denounced by the Republicans a tactic too “Democratic” in nature. Historically, the Californian House Speaker- Kevin McCarthy was ousted over a similar reason.
Behind Taylor Greene vs Johnson
A far-right conservative herself, Taylor Greene has proved her allegiance to “no-aid-policy” repeatedly. She condemned House Speaker’ $1.2 trillion bill aimed to fund agencies like U.S Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security. “He should not bring funding for Ukraine” she said.
Weaponizing the gathering of allies to her support to pass through the floor-vote is a strategy, Taylor Greene invigorates. Even though her public lambasting of the incumbent House Speaker is kept on full display through long chains of social-media posts, yet her true plan-of-action is seeded in her chest and whispered only to her “close-aids”.
In an interview (via CNN), she told her plans to further advance her motion without giving away “too much”. She managed to spill few beans without any quantitative confirmations, exclaiming, “There is a number to people who have committed, and few who have expressed huge sigh of relief”.
Even though she might have a number to her supporters, yet there are many who have opposed her attempt as a large-scale, media gauging, publicity stunt unworthy of any consideration.
Examining Other Republicans’ Standpoint
The Republicans of the House Freedom Caucus did not reciprocate to Green’s plans with loud enthusiasm or unmatched velocity. Many signaling their lack of appetite to oust the House Speaker. One of the Republican; Bob Good of Virginia, accentuated on Greene’s narcissistic ideologies as “attention-oriented” and “unsubstantial”. Many other hardliners equally dissatisfied by Greene’ stand, calling out the unimaginable chaos that will erupt if they have to reapproach the nomination and selection of the House Speaker, given the narrow margins between Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives.
GOP Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia dismissed Greene’s threats as a warning and nothing more serious than that. But also mentioned the steps their administration should take to secure their own borders before jumping to secure other country’s borders.
The House Republican Representatives’ support of Mike Johnson is conditional.
Those conditions are based upon the impending Ukraine aid bill to be presented in the House in April. The bill advocates for a $60 billion funding package to Ukraine to continue its defense against Russian invasion.
If the parameters of the much contested bill satisfies the House Representatives, then it will be a – bipartisan approval of the Speaker.
