Police found South Korean star Lee Sun-kyun committed suicide, while he was facing investigation for suspected drug use.
A man in his forties was found unconscious in a car in a park in central Seoul at around 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday), and police later confirmed that he was actor Lee. There were charcoal briquettes in the passenger seat.
Earlier, South Korean police received a report stating that Lee Sun-kyun left the house after writing a note similar to a suicide note and that his car had disappeared. A fire official said, “He was declared dead, but he was not taken to a hospital.”
Lee underwent three rounds of police questioning on suspicion of using marijuana and other illegal drugs at the home of a hostess who works at an upscale bar in Seoul’s Gangnam district on multiple occasions since early this year, including the last questioning last Saturday.
Lee Sun-kyun claimed that the flight attendant tricked him into taking drugs and that he did not know what he was taking. Lee tested negative in both a short test conducted during the police investigation and a drug test conducted by the National Forensic Service last month.
The previous day, Lee submitted a request to take a lie detector test to the police agency of Incheon City, 30 kilometers west of Seoul, claiming his innocence.
Lee Sun-Kyun insisted that a lie detector test should be used in the investigation to determine the truth between Lee and the flight attendant, who reportedly told police that the actor had used drugs at her home several times.
Lee’s lawyer said on Tuesday: “If the flight attendant was telling the truth, the result of Lee’s drug test conducted by the National Forensic Service should have been positive, but it was negative.”
Lee gained international fame after the film “Parasite”, in which he played a major role, won the Academy Awards in 2020.
