Selena Gomez, who has 430 million followers on Instagram, announced that she needs a break from the “app” and will delete her account, after being widely criticized for her comments on the current situation between Israel and Palestine.
Selena revealed, in a post on the Stories feature on Instagram, which she then deleted on Thursday, November 2, her decision to delete her account from the social media application, explaining: “I will take a break and delete my account on Instagram… I am done. I do not support any of what is happening,” according to Russia Today.
Selena announced, for the first time, that she was staying away from social media, justifying this by saying: “Because my heart breaks to see all the horror, hatred, violence, and terrorism that is happening in the world.”
She said at the beginning of the conflict: “We are devastated by the images & reports coming from the Middle East,” began the lengthy post. “Thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes & millions of civilians have been displaced & left without access to food, water, medicine, or necessities for survival. A large number of these victims are children. Palestinian civilians must be protected, period.”
“We remain heartbroken by the horrible terror attack against innocent civilians in Israel on October 7th, many of them also children,” continued Rare. “There is no situation where attacks on civilians are acceptable. We strongly denounce any & all forms of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.”She faced a backlash as she posted about the conflict saying:” “That’s what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t.” Many comments criticized her and claimed that she may pretend that she is a victim, and her Instagram is useless.
Not only Selena who had got slammed on her stance towards the conflict, but also other celebrities have faced backlash … former adult film star Mia Khalifa and Gigi Hadid got death threats as they support Palestine.
