Intensity of the earthquakes and casualties
The earthquake and aftershocks rocked Taiwan repeatedly from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning. The maximum intensity of the tremor is 6.3 on the richter scale. The intensity of the first shook of the tremor was 5.5 on the Richter scale. After that, until Tuesday morning, the capital of Taiwan was repeatedly shaken by aftershocks.
Around 2:30 on Tuesday night, there was a strong tremor again. Its intensity was 6.0 on the Richter scale. Just six minutes after that, another earthquake occurred in Taipei. The magnitude of this tremor was 6.3 on the Richter scale. It was the highest number of earthquakes in Taiwan since Monday afternoon. The epicenter of the quake was in the Hualien area in eastern Taiwan. So far, no casualties have been reported as a result of the tremors. According to local sources, there was no special damage.
The epicenter of the April 3 earthquake was also in Hualien city. The magnitude of this tremor was 7.2 on the Richter scale. 14 people died. About 700 people were injured. The terrible earthquake caused huge damage. The aftershock lasted through the night. Many roads were blocked due to landslides. Residents have to face extreme problems in hilly areas. The entire city was badly damaged. According to local media sources, Taiwan has been shaken at least 1,000 times since then. However, the intensity of aftershocks is not that strong.
Tourists reaction to the earthquake
There was a tourist in a hotel in Taipei. He told the news agency AFP about his experience. Said, “I was washing my hands. Suddenly I felt dizzy. I thought my head was spinning. Somehow I went to the room and saw that the whole hotel seemed to start shaking.”
Taiwan is already prone to earthquakes. Taiwan is at the very edge of two tectonic plates. That is why earthquakes are often felt here. The memory of the 2016 earthquake is still fresh for the people of that country. 100 people died. Earlier in 1999, about 2 thousand people died in the earthquake.
