Mitchell Marsh, the player in controversy. He’s part of the dressing unit that has lifted the World Cup twice. Back in 2015 and now in 2023. This is a rare opportunity for any player in the history of the game.
Well, there are theories surrounding the controversy.
First Theory
ICC doesn’t give the World Cup trophy to the team. They retain it with themselves. Therefore, the notion of disrespect stands null and void. Can ICC take any action against Mitchell Marsh? Well, they probably won’t judge the team about how they conduct themselves out of the cricket field. It does not fall in their jurisdiction. ICC can probably issue a guideline regarding the player’s conduct with the trophy. But, the chances of doing so are minuscule.
Second Theory
Australia is the winning team. How can anyone have an opinion, about what the team player does behind closed doors? They are the winning team. They well might destroy the trophy, if they want to. But, the logical fallacy in this argument is, if they had kept it behind closed doors. There won’t be a controversy right now. Sachin Tendulkar had to wait for 6 World Cups, to finally be able to lift the one. Every team puts their best foot forward playing for their nations. But, the majority of the players don’t get the chance to lift.
Why are People Angry?
The World Cup is a rare opportunity. It binds people together. The symbolic significance of the World Cup is quite high around the world. People in India, treat cricket as a religion. The World Cup Trophy is like a Worshipping idol for many.
Cricket is called the gentlemen’s game. But, it’s quite disheartening to see a picture like this posted on X (formerly Twitter). This undermines the spirit of the game.
