The Pentagon said that the US military carried out retaliatory strikes on Monday in Iraq after an attack launched earlier by militants allied with Iran, which led to the injury of three Americans. One of them is in critical condition.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said: In a statement: “My prayers are with the brave Americans who were injured.”
Earlier on Monday, an attack with a bomb-laden drone targeted a base containing American forces and forces of the international coalition to combat ISIS near Erbil Airport in northern Iraq, according to Iraqi authorities who said that the attack led to “casualties.”
American forces and the international coalition forces to combat ISIS in Iraq and Syria have been subjected to dozens of attacks since mid-October, a reflection of the regional tension that was heightened by the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s spokesman, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, stated: “Outlaw groups” sent an explosives-laden drone near Erbil Civil Airport “Monday at 15:50.”
He added, “This accident led to injuries and casualties, disrupted the work of the airport, and affected the timing of civilian flights,” without providing further details about the number of casualties.
