The World Health Organization on Friday called for urgent action to address the worsening health and humanitarian crises in Sudan and called on the international community to increase financial aid.
The organization’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said: (via X platform)
“Urgent action is needed to stop the escalation of the conflict in Sudan, where humanitarian and health crises are worsening with the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, most of them women and children.”
Since mid-April, Sudan has been witnessing a bloody war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
To escape the fighting in Khartoum, more than half a million Sudanese took refuge in Gezira State. However, the Rapid Support Forces finally advanced into this state, attacked the town of Wad Madani on December 15, and forced more than 300,000 people to flee again.
“While WHO and its partners respond to acute health needs, in particular by controlling the spread of diseases and combating the threats of malnutrition, it also calls for increased financial support from the international community to meet the urgent health needs of affected populations,” Tedros added.
The UN official continued, “This includes enhancing the provision of basic health services to the most vulnerable groups in the affected states, as at least 70% of health facilities are out of service due to the conflict.”
United Nations estimates indicate that at least 7.1 million people have been displaced since the beginning of the ongoing conflict while 1.5 million of them took refuge in neighboring countries.
