Google has once again come under the fire for its overtly ‘woke’ culture after many users shared their complaints over X (formally twitter) about its Gemini chatbot seemingly refused to generate images of white people.
When prompts such as “founding fathers of America” or “Viking” or “pope” are searched the Gemini, only depicted people of color making the results factually inaccurate and racist.
For the Prompts which were specially asking for “a white family”, Gemini responded with “unable to generate images that specified a certain ethnicity or race”. But easy results were generated when asked for a black family
The bot eve rejected to generate images of prominent historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Galileo.
Views of techies on Gemini
Paul Graham, the co-founder of Silicon Valley startup accelerator Y Combinator said. “The ridiculous images generated by Gemini aren’t an anomaly. They’re a self-portrait of Google’s bureaucratic corporate culture”.
“Shifted from just organizing the world’s information to advancing a particular agenda”, Said Ana Mostarac, head of operations at Mubadala Ventures.
Both former and current employees of the company have blamed the higher management for technology with political ideology and biasness, Alesksa Gordic former research engineer at Google Deepmind spoke about this pervasive culture during his experience on X. “It saddened me that none of the senior leadership in DeepMind dared to change or even question this ideology,” he posted.
Yesterday, Jack Krawczyk – senior director of product from Google said the team was working to correct Gemini’s errors. “As part of our AI principles and guidelines, we design our image generation capabilities to reflect our global user base, and we take representation and bias seriously. We will continue to do this for open ended prompts. Historical contexts have more nuance to them and we will further try to accommodate that. This is part of the alignment process – iteration on feedback,” he posted on X.
