Celine Dion’s medical condition
In a recent interview the Canadian singer Celine Marie Dion shared about being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome(STP). She was diagnosed with this disease at the end of 2022. The star was suffering from a rare neurological disorder that affects one in ten million. Celine has now shared about her struggle with the disease. The actor also says that this disease went undiagnosed and unconfirmed for seventeen years.
Celine says she began to experience symptoms in the mid-2000s. In the beginning there was muscle spasm, difficulty in breathing and singing. The whole body is throbbing with pain. She said, “Twenty years ago I was on a tour in Germany when I first experienced muscle spasms. After breakfast, I was feeling a kind of tension.”
Because of this, many of her live concerts were also cancelled at that time. As soon as the disease was diagnosed, the popular singer of Hollywood started to take treatment. However, there has been no news of improvement in the physical condition in the past.
From taking hot baths to over-the-counter medications to ENT. She saw doctors and ophthalmologists but there was no cure. As the symptoms worsened again, the process was unable to be performed. She slowly started taking muscle relaxants.
In the beginning, two milligrams of the medicine was taken, but soon the dose was increased to 90 milligrams. Still the symptoms did not subside. The singer also says that even though it was late, after the diagnosis was made, there was a change after the necessary treatments were done. Presently he is happy and able to share his experiences with others.
Confronting the disease’s challenges, she asserted, “I’m going to go back onstage, even if I have to crawl, even if I have to talk with my hands. I will. I will.”
What is Stiff Person Syndrome?
It is a rare autoimmune disease. This disease affects the central nervous system. The onset of symptoms is a feeling of inflexibility in the muscles from the neck to the waist. Soon it affects the arms and other muscles of the body. It can also lead to muscle spasms that gradually become painful. Noise, mental agitation, even light touch can sometimes aggravate muscle spasms. In severe cases, it may become difficult to walk or even move.
The disease is rare, affecting one in ten million. The disease is reported more in women than in men. Although symptoms can occur at any age, people between the ages of thirty and sixties are most commonly affected. Stiff person syndrome is more common in people with medical conditions like diabetes, thyroiditis, vitiligo, and severe anemia. Some types of cancer (breast, lung, kidney, thyroid, bowel) also have the condition.
What is the cause of the disease?
The cause behind Stiff Person Syndrome remains unclear to researchers. Autoimmune disease is defined as a disease in which the immune system ‘attacks’ healthy cells in the body.
Symptoms of Stiff Person Syndrome may take months or years to become apparent. In some, the disease subsides over time, but in others, it becomes severe. If the pain and muscle spasms come and go in the beginning, then it becomes constant. Treatment is given according to the symptoms. Treatment is given to reduce pain and discomfort and restore the body’s mobility.
Earlier this year, Celine made a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards, presenting the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift. Throughout her illustrious career, Dion has sold over 250 million albums.
