Pushing back against what she called as “lies” about her romantic relation with a special prosecutor, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis took the witness stand on Thursday during a special hearing over misconduct allegations that threaten to upend one of four criminal cases against Donald trump.
Willis who fought to stay off the witness stand, has agreed to come forward as a previous witness said that her relationship with prosecutor Nathan Wade had begun much earlier than they claim. The testimony of district attorney got heated by the questions of the defence attorney who is continuously trying to remove Willis from Trump’s 2020 election interference case.
“Do you think I’m on trial? These people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020. I’m not on trial no matter how hard you try to put me on trial,” Willis told defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant.
It is expected that Willis will once again take the witness stand on Friday to continue answering questions.
With revelations about their personal conduct and relationships have shifted the focus away from Trump’s own conduct and have raised several questions regarding the future of the case as Trump is getting ready to claim the White House once again.
The revelations of Fani and Wade’s romantic relationship has given an opportunity to Trump and his allies to question the legitimacy of Willis’ case, which Trump has characterized as politically motivated. Other republicans in opposition have demanded for an investigation into Willis, who is a democrat and is standing for re-elections this year.
Donald and his co-defendants have argued that the romantic affair presents a big conflict of interest that force Fani off the case. Wade tried to downplay this move by referring himself and Willis as “private people”.
“There is nothing secret or salacious about having a private life,” Wade said. “Nothing.”
After the testimonies of both Wade and Willis it has come to light that they didn’t start dating until 2022 and their relationship ended months ago.
During his testimony, Wade also admitted that he was having sex with Fani during his separation from his estranged wife, this admission has threatened to undermine the prosecutors’ credibility as they are getting ready for a big trial in case accusing the former US president Donald Trump and others of conspiring to manipulate the 2020 elections results in his favor.
If Willis gets disqualified, a council that backs prosecuting attorneys would find a new attorney to take the charge to proceed with the case or could drop the charges altogether.
Merchant, an attorney from Trump co-defendant Michael Roman, was the first to revel Willis and Wade’s romantic relationship.
Wade was pressurized by defense attorneys to answer questions that were very uncomfortable mostly about his romantic love affair with Willis, the hearing began with a long soaring battle between lawyers over who must answer the questions.
In a court filing earlier this month, Willis’ office insisted that she has no financial or personal conflict of interest and that there are no grounds to dismiss the case or to remove her from the prosecution. Her filing called the allegations “salacious” and said they were designed to generate headlines.
