Thousands of citizens in Niger took to the streets to celebrate the French army’s withdrawal from the country, which ended on December 22, Agence France-Presse reported.

The agency said, “On Friday, thousands celebrated the departure of the last French forces stationed in Niger a week ago.”

The Prime Ministers of Burkina Faso and Mali participated in the gathering, and arrived in the country, according to a statement by the National Council for the Defense of the Fatherland of Niger on the “X” network, to express support for the Niger authorities, noting that the three countries are members of the newly formed Sahel countries alliance.

According to Agence France-Presse, the demonstration included concerts and acrobatic performances, and anti-French slogans were heard, and the Nigerian flags , Burkina Faso, Mali, and Russia were seen among the crowd.

The agency indicated that this millennium demonstration was the culmination of the sit-ins that began on September 2 in front of the air base in the capital, Niamey, to demand the withdrawal of French forces.

The last batch of French soldiers left Niger in two military aircraft on December 22, and France handed over the temporary air base to the Nigerien authorities.

Niger was Paris’s last ally in the Sahel region before the military came to power there on July 26, after withdrawing from Mali and Burkina Faso.
