A Proposition – too amusing to be true?
A federal prison in Florida – Miami Federal Correctional Institution became a topic of legislative contention days after few members of House Republican suggested renaming Washington Dulles International Airport after former President Donald Trump.
The two-page bill introduced by House GOP chief deputy whip – Guy Reschenthaler and co-sponsored by 6 other lawmakers, which would push to have Washington Dulles, DC’s main international airport, renamed – after Donald Trump, surely tickled some democratic bones.
As a response to the GOP suggestion, three members of House Democrats – Rep. Gerry Conolly, of Virginia; Jared Moskowitz, of Florida; and John Garamendi, of California, ideated on renaming the Miami federal prison after the former President.
The legislation, which would rename the Miami Federal Correctional Institution in Florida as the, “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution”, was officially filed on Wednesday, April 3rd.
In an attempted strike against his Republican colleagues, Gerry Conolly, during his proposition of the bill added a whimsical dig on the dozen felony charges the former President face, citing – “If something has to be named after him, it should be a federal prison.”. Conolly wrote on X.
Federal Prison/ International Airport – Will there be a winner?
The U.S Constitution enables the transfer of a bill into a law only after it passes through two congressional houses, each advocating popular support for the proposed bill. The approval for a proposal is dependent on the House – the bill is proposed in and the members who form majority in that house.
The mocking-proposal set-forth by house democrats for renaming Miami federal prison after Donald Trump is very unlikely to muster consideration in the lower-chamber controlled by Republicans. So it is for the Republican bill which will very likely die in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
The bill housed by democrats not only voiced a challenge against the opposition proposal but also triggered a bullet at the criminally-sensitive image of Donald Trump.
Federal Prison – a metaphor for Trump’s legal gamble
Trump is facing multiple federal criminal charges in Florida alleging mishandling of sensitive information including withholding of national defense information, untrue representation, outraging violent campaigns to obstruct justice, conspiracy to conceal documents and records. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a new trial date.
The infamous case of overturning the 2020 presidential elections alleging Trump’s involvement does not have a fixed trial date yet. The trial which is registered for hearing in Georgia state court and federal court in Washington D.C is on hold after Trump appealed that he is protected by presidential immunity. The U.S Supreme Court is set to hear the arguments on the impending trial on April 25th.
Trump is also facing a state criminal charge in New York for trying to falsify records alleging the former president hush-money payment paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the closing days of the 2016 Presidential election. He has pleaded not guilty. The trial is scheduled to begin on April 15th.
Trump’s unending legal warfare has what has inspired house democrats to present a bill suggesting that the Miami federal prison is the only facility deserving of having Trump’s name stamped on it.
Rep. Guy Reschenthaler who sponsored the bill suggesting renaming Dulles after Trump tweeted a message appreciating the former President and the America he created under his leadership. The best President of my lifetime, he wrote on X.
Miami Federal Correctional Institution is a low-security United States federal prison for male-inmates in Florida. Gerry Connolly noted that it was the closest federal prison, 90 miles south, of the former President’s home Mar-a-lago and would serve to be the best state institution to have to bestow Donald Trump’s name.
