Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that Sweden will not negotiate with Hungary over its application to join NATO, which Budapest is the sole member of the alliance to yet ratify.
Sweden, along with Finland, applied to join the alliance in in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
But its membership was being held up by Turkey and Hungary, keeping Sweden in the clouds of uncertainty and frustration.
However, Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan signed Sweden’s accession documents on Thursday, leaving the ball in Hungarian court as last hold-out.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, however, said he now expected Hungary’s parliament to give a green light at the end of the month.
The Swedish and Hungarian Prime Minister will meet next week at the European councils meeting in Brussels, but Sweden would not any new promises on NATO, said Kristersson.
Although, he said two countries have a lot more to discuss, including Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency, support for Ukraine and their same fighter jet programme.
What is the Process of joining NATO?
All the 31 member countries must sign to ratify an applicant country’s acceptance before it can join the alliance.
As Orbon has been angered by Swedish criticism of developments under his regime.
He has invited Kristersson to Budapest for talks over NATO.
NATO chief said he expected Hungary’s parliament to ratify Sweden’s ascension when it reconvenes at the end of February.
“So we have to wait for that”, Stoltenberg told the reporters in Brussels on Friday.
Kristersson said he did not know when Sweden will become the NATO’s 32nd member, but expected it to be very soon.
