The league title may have gone to their bitter rivals Real Madrid, but Barcelona are in a fight to be best of the rest in La Liga.
Barcelona returned to the second place in the league table after defeating Real Sociedad on Monday. Xavi Hernandez’s side won by 2-0 at the Olympic Stadium. Barca collected 76 points in 35 matches in the scoreboard. On the other hand Real Madrid, who are at the top with 90 points in the draw, have already secured the league win. Third place Girona has collected 75 points in 35 games.
Match highlight and goals
Raphinha came close for Barca in the first half, pinging a shot off the post from outside the box but didn’t get any luck. Barca scored the first goal in the 40th minute of the match. Barca attacked quickly. Ilkay Gundogan took the ball forward and passed to Lamine Yamal. The Barca winger coolly scored his 5th goal of the season in La Liga. In addition, he helped scoring 9 goals in all competitions this season and he also scored 7 goals himself in this season.
La Real enjoyed a flurry of chances after the break. Brais Mendez fired wide and Sheraldo Becker had a shot acrobatically blocked by Pau Cubarsi, who enjoyed an excellent showing after a shaky run.
Barca struggled to create after the break – not least due to a sloppy performance from Robert Lewandowski. In the 3 minutes of added time of the match, Barca received a penalty on VAR review. Sociedad centerback Alvaro Odriozola handballed in their own box. Barca winger Raphinha had no trouble scoring the penalty from a 12 yard spot.

The Brazilian took off his jersey and showed a message written on the top of the inside jersey, “Pray for Us.” He asked for support for the flood-affected people of the Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Sociedad goalkeeper Remiro stopped his great curling shot before scoring from the penalty spot. Raphinha also hit a shot from a fair distance on the post.
Player of the match
Lamine Yamal took the title for the player of the match. The calm way he struck home the opener should give him confidence. He beat two men dribbling into the box and then exchanged passes with Gundogan and was about to strike at goal when Pacheco lunged back to nip the ball off his toes. Then, Lewandowski came deep and then played the ball through to Gundogan and he squeezed it square to Lamine who calmly guided home first time into the corner.
The win lifts Barcelona a point clear of Girona with three games remaining, Sociedad remain in seventh.
